In 1927 Babe Ruth hit a record breaking 60 home runs. He was 32 years old and certainly at his prime. Ruth has gone down in baseball history as the most popular figure the game has ever produced. Ruth was known for his flamboyant life style, but he is remembered as a home run hitter that loved kids.

The adoration of the crowds was returned tenfold by Ruth. He signed autographs willingly, offered strangers draws off his soda, and surreptitiously visited ailing children who idolized him. No matter what Ruth did, he gave it all he had and more.

Ruth grew up in a home for wayward boys which is where his baseball career began. He started as a catcher but switched to pitching because his teammates complained about the force of his throws. At age 19 he was picked up by the Baltimore Orioles who gave him the nickname, "Babe." He was sold that same year to the Boston Red Socks where he played for five year before being sold to the New York Yankees. Ruth played out field with the Yankees from 1920 to 1934. The Babe was a phenomenal box office draw which was his prime value to club owners. By the mid 1930's his excessive life style caught up with him, the Babe was in such poor physical condition, running the bases was very difficult. He was released from the Yankees by mutual consent, when he could not fulfill his aspirations of becoming a manager. Ruth found a temporary home in 1935 with the Boston Braves. That also ended when his desire to become a manager conflicted with management, who was looking only at his ability to increase box office receipts as a home run hitter and celebrity.

The next thirteen years of his life, until he died of cancer in 1948, the man who was considered Baseball's all time great could not find a job in the game he loved so dearly.
