| On December 7, 1941 aboard the battleship Nevada, band leader McMillan had his 23 men in place for morning colors at 8:00. Shortly before 8:00 the men noticed aircraft and a lot of dirt and sand going up in the air on Ford Island. Muffled explosions began to be heard down the battleship line. Then it was 8:00 and the band started playing "The Star-Spangled Banner." A Japanese torpedo plane skimmed over the water launching a torpedo toward the Arizona and pealed off passing directly over the Nevada. The Japanese tail gunner shot at the band and the flag raising detail. Infamy's First Glimpse captures that moment when the two sailors raising the flag on the Nevada came eye ball to eye ball with a new enemy born out of a surprise attack.
A second torpedo plane passed over the Nevada, immediately behind the first, repeating the scenario of shooting at the band and the flag raising detail. How McMillan handled the situation became one of the most interesting stories to come out of World War II. |
