| Lt. Col. Harold W. Bauer was a leader of the Marine Corps fighter Pilots on Guadalcanal in the early days of World War II when the outcome was any thing but assured. Known as Injun Joe, he was marked by the Marine Corps for a Group Air Command. Herald by his fellow pilots to be an inspiring leader, a graphic teacher of fighter tactics, and aggressive in combat. Joe Foss sums him up with the statement, “Joe Bauer was the best.” Injun Joe was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic air victories and leadership. He was lost in action on November 14, 1942 while fighting along side Joe Foss in a battle described by Admiral King, as “the fiercest battle ever fought.” Injun Joe was just six days away from his 34th birthday. |
