On December 7, 1941 there were many heroes at Pearl Harbor. One of those heroic efforts escaped history books by being buried in official classified documents. This is the story of Thomas Arthur White, Boatswains Mate 2nd class, on the battleship Arizona. White was almost a one man navy in those early minutes of the attack. After the first bomb hit the Arizona, White got the visitors off the ship and with the help of his division officer tried to find and rescue the commanding officer. He then proceeded to fight fires, save the Captain's Gig from sinking and rescue men by taking them to Ford Island by boat. After being in the oily water himself trying in vain to keep his boat in operation, he swam to a derelict boat, which he got started so he could return to the Arizona. With the Japanese attack still in its full fury, and the Arizona sunk with only the stern above water, White noticed that The Colors had not been raised. White re-boarded the sinking and burning Arizona while it was still under attack and single handed raised our Nation's Colors so that all seeing the destruction of the Arizona could take encouragement on that "day of infamy."
